Certified or Non-Certified Heating Engineer: What You Need to Know Before Entrusting Your Installations
Hiring a heating engineer to install or maintain your boiler is not a trivial matter. In Belgium, this profession is strictly regulated by law.
What is a certified heating engineer?
A certified heating engineer is a professional officially recognized by the regional authorities (Wallonia, Brussels, Flanders) to work on heating systems. They have completed specific training and obtained certification proving their technical skills and knowledge of legal standards.
In Wallonia
Certification is issued by the Walloon Agency for Air and Climate (AwAC). There are several levels:
- L: for liquid fuels (heating oil)
- GI and GII: for gaseous fuels
- DAI and DAII: for advanced diagnostics
In Brussels
Technicians must be certified according to PEB (Energy Performance of Buildings) standards. They are classified based on the type of boiler (oil, gas GI, gas GII).
What are the risks of using a non-certified heating engineer?
Hiring a non-certified heating engineer can have serious consequences:
- Non-compliant work
A non-certified engineer may ignore legal standards, leading to unsafe or inefficient installations. - Lack of guarantee
Without certification, no certificate of compliance can be issued. This can cause problems in case of resale, inspection, or accident. - Insurance refusal
In the event of a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning, insurance may refuse to cover damages if the installation was carried out by a non-certified professional. - Legal penalties
A non-certified heating engineer risks administrative fines and even criminal prosecution in cases of serious regulatory breaches.
